I have written before about the “power of we”, people coming together for a common purpose to do amazing things. That innate desire within people that comes alive in certain times when they are driven to do something that may be ordinary, but combined create something extraordinary in the universe. I see it every day in the Bring Smiles to Seniors program and often all across the world.
Many times we fail to choose to be a part of something because we think that what we have to offer isn’t enough. We feel like we can’t match those that have the means to do more and therefore our contribution to a cause isn’t really going to matter. What we don’t realize is that is so far from the truth. When you consider a cause, you have to consider what the ultimate sum of the effort is going to be, not the individual contribution. Let me explain.
In the Bring Smiles to Seniors program, one card means that one senior that was sitting lonely, feeling like they have been forgotten and abandoned or have no family left, get to be reminded that they are cared for and loved. One stamp means that a senior that is at home that may no longer have family involved gets to go to their mailbox and find a surprise and a reminder that they are remembered and matter. A mere $7.55 means that a senior community with 100 people can receive a package of cards for each and every one of their residents to put a smile on their face. Combine all those together and you have created the recipe to touch the world.
Over and over in our societies we have seen people come together and accomplish what seemed to be the impossible. Rebuilding communities after a storm because people with individual talents combined those talents to build structures. Mass shootings in schools and churches where students and parishioners have come together to fight for change and reform so that they can feel safe in their own learning institutions. Families that have been met with devastation made new by the kindness of jars in stores and food and clothing drives. Each and every situation involving single contributions that combined provided mountains of assistance.
Every one of us has the ability to be a part of something great. We all possess some talent that can contribute in a way that ultimately shows what can be accomplished. It doesn’t always have to be money. It can be a talent, skill or even moral support that helps drive towards a successful end goal. That my friends is the “power of we”. Sometimes I like to say me + thee = we. The people equation that shows that we have the ability to do things beyond our wildest expectations.
Have a great day and remember to be the reason someone smiles.
